The study of Yoga has always filled me with awe, especially awareness through breathing techniques. Awareness or 'careful mindfulness' is concentrating on what is being experienced at this very moment, without responding to or passing judgment on it.
It includes figuring out how to objectively observe the wanderings of your mind and thoughts and to intentionally disregard them. If you don’t understand this just pause right now. Try to only think of one single thought for 10 seconds. You might see a thousand thoughts and images flash before your eyes before your mind starts to settle down and focus. Being totally present in the moment is no easy task and must be trained and practiced.
The postures, even the most basic, are a method of focusing all your attention on your body so that your mind does not have the opportunity to wander and you can begin to practice careful mindfulness. It is important to take a moment each day to slow down reflect and for once be in the present moment. Yoga is a wonderful way in which to do this.
